Milano Family Winery is located in one of the three remaining hop kilns in Mendocino County and the only one open to the public. All wines are made right on site at the old hop kiln. The winery has been producing fine, handcrafted wines for over 35 years. Premium grapes are carefully selected from local growers whose vineyards have been developed and planted with specific vines to take advantage of the soil, sun and terroir.

All wines are made right on site at the historic redwood-clad hop kiln by winemaker Deanna Starr. Each wine is carefully tended into soulful, palate pleasing delicacies. Limited bottling of Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon plus some of the more unique varietals such as Carignane, Charbono, Malbec, Petit Verdot, Valdiguie as well as Bordeaux blends are produced. Deanna loves to make wine blends and even does fun, sassy blends like Big Ass Red, Big Ass Blonde and Sunshine. Late Harvest Zinfandel and Ports are also a specialty of Milano Winery. Fresh fruit, soft tannins, spicy mouth-filling flavors and intoxicating aromas and bouquet characterize her wines.

You can step back in time and enjoy the country setting of the old hop kiln and the picnic area overlooking the orchards and vineyards of the Sanel Valley. Visit with the llama and sheep in the pasture. Say hello to the pygmy goat, pot belly pig and Sebastopol geese. Watch the chickens’ search for tidbits or study the tortoises cruising around their enclosure. Enjoy the marvels of today’s winemaking. Be sure to ask for a tour of this beautiful, historic structure (by appointment only) that was transformed into a modern winemaking facility.

The hop kiln was erected in the 1940's to replace the original hop kiln that burned down in the 1930's due to a bootlegger's still! Hop growing was a major industry throughout Mendocino from the 1870's until the mid-1950's. The hop kiln was used to dry and bale the hops before shipping them worldwide for beer brewing.

Milano Family winery offers tours of this beautiful, historic structure. You can see how hops were originally processed and, of course, the current winemaking activities. The drying building of the hop kiln now houses our tank room filled with gleaming stainless steel tanks used for fermentation and storage. The hop kiln's original storage room is now the tasting room and one floor below is the barrel room where the wines age in French oak barrels.

The tasting room is warm, rustic and intimate – taste different wines in a comfortable atmosphere.
